The Director of Midwifery is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of maternity and midwifery services. The post holder acts as the professional lead for midwifery, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, woman-centred care across hospital and community pathways.

Accountable to the Chief Nurse, the post holder provides expert professional advice, drives continuous improvement, leads transformation programmes, and ensures compliance with national standards and regulatory requirements. The role also holds a corporate portfolio and deputises for the Chief Nurse as required.

The post holder will work in partnership with system partners and national bodies to shape and deliver long-term maternity strategy and sustainable service models that improve outcomes and family experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the strategic development and delivery of maternity and midwifery services.

  • Act as the professional lead for midwifery and maternity practice across the organisation.

  • Develop and implement maternity strategy aligned with national policy and system priorities.

  • Advise the Board and Executive leaders on midwifery, maternity quality, safety, and workforce matters.

  • Represent the organisation at regional and national forums.

  • Build and maintain effective partnerships across the Integrated Care System and with key stakeholders and regulators.

  • Lead maternity transformation and innovation programmes.

  • Promote and support midwifery-led research and academic collaboration.

  • Provide visible, compassionate, and transformational leadership for midwifery teams.

  • Act as an advocate for women, families, and the midwifery profession.

  • Promote evidence-based practice and continuous quality improvement.

  • Support and coach senior midwifery leaders and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Hold executive-level responsibility for maternity quality, safety, and risk management.

  • Ensure robust governance and assurance systems are in place from service to Board.

  • Lead compliance with national maternity safety programmes and standards.

Qualifications & Registration (Essential)
  • Registered Midwife with current NMC registration.

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • Senior leadership and management training or equivalent experience.

  • Evidence of continuous professional development.

  • Mentorship or education qualification.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate management qualification.

Knowledge & Experience (Essential)
  • Extensive senior clinical and management leadership experience in maternity services.

  • Experience operating at senior or executive level in complex healthcare organisations.

  • Experience representing organisations at regional or national level.

  • Strong understanding of maternity, midwifery, and nursing policy and workforce strategy.

  • Experience leading large-scale service improvement and transformation.

  • Experience in governance, quality, and risk leadership.

  • Demonstrated success in change management and service redesign.

  • Experience managing budgets, performance, and multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Strong understanding of equality, diversity, and inclusion in workforce strategy.
