Theatre Practitioner – Scrub (ODP/RGN)

 

Core Duties:

  • Monitor and assist in the delivery of patient care

  • Apply and ensure others comply with legislation, policies, and procedures

  • Support the anaesthetic and recovery phases of the operating journey

 

Your Duties:

 

  • Engage with the scrub team/SFA/Circulating in confirming roles for the day

  • Be involved in the daily briefing ‘Huddle’ before the commencement of surgical lists, and ensure the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist is completed and adhered to for all patients

  • Getting the operating theatre ready – including preparation of equipment

  • Checking tray for correct instruments, extras, and swaps, and check with runner

  • Depending on the type of surgery, ensure that prothesis are available

  • Observe the safety of the patient during positioning on the trolley / operating table, including people moving procedures and use of positioning aides

  • Communicating with other departments, and members of the perioperative team

  • Verbalise to surgeon that swabs, sharps and instruments are correct prior, during and post-surgery

  • Assist in the cleaning and administering of dressing if required

  • Completing the care plan, theatre register and providing a detailed handover to recovery practitioner

  • To efficiently complete all written documentation

  • Be a role model for staff on all departmental and hospital-wide matters

  • Ensure the working environment is as safe as possible and complies with company, professional, legal requirements and guidelines

  • Adhere to Infection Prevention Control policies and procedures, including hand hygiene

  • Safe disposal of sharps

  • Instrument tray to be packed, recorded, and put in sluice

 

Requirements:

 

  • Registered Practitioner with NMC or HCPC

  • Previous experience within a similar role

  • Experience in scrubbing

  • An understanding of perioperative patient care

  • Desirable to have ILS Training

  • Ability to demonstrate high standards of verbal and written communication

  • Ability to work flexibly and respond to urgent matters

  • Reliability and dependability

  • Adaptability to change and willingness to embrace new ideas and processes
