Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
Taking responsibility for the total patient journey during the intra‑operative phase
Acting as patient advocate throughout surgery
Maintaining strict aseptic technique, including management of infected cases
Preparing theatres in line with surgeon preferences and procedural requirements
Ensuring accurate counts of instruments, swabs and sharps
Handling specimens, biopsies, clinical waste and hazardous substances correctly
Providing a comprehensive handover to recovery staff
Recognising deteriorating patients and initiating first‑line resuscitation where required
Theatre Coordination & Safety
Circulating and coordinating theatre activity effectively
Ensuring correct preparation and safe use of all electrical equipment
Supporting decontamination, sterilisation and validation processes
Adhering to Health & Safety, COSHH, infection control and risk‑management policies
Supporting incident prevention and maintaining awareness of medicolegal risks
Communication & Teamwork
Communicating effectively with surgeons, anaesthetists, recovery teams, wards and TSSU
Participating in team meetings and sharing key information appropriately
Contributing positively to a supportive, professional theatre culture
Education, Audit & Development
Maintaining ongoing CPD in line with NMC/HCPC requirements
Supporting and supervising junior staff and learners
Participating in audit, clinical governance and service improvement initiatives
Contributing to the ongoing development of theatre services
The Ideal Candidate
Essential
Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC)
Minimum 2 years’ scrub experience in theatres
Evidence of competence in scrub practice
Strong understanding of infection control, risk management and theatre safety
Excellent communication and organisational skills
Commitment to delivering high‑quality patient care
Desirable
Post‑basic Theatre qualification
Mentorship or Teaching & Assessing qualification
Awareness of Clinical Governance
Willingness to work towards Surgical First Assistant status
