Operating within a highly specialised surgical environment, the organisation supports complex procedures across colorectal, urology, gynaecology, robotic surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, brachytherapy and other advanced surgical services.
As Deputy Theatre Manager, you will hold a pivotal leadership role within the theatre management team, combining clinical credibility with operational excellence.
You will retain a strong clinical presence (anaesthetics, scrub, or recovery) while leading teams, driving quality improvement, and supporting the safe, effective delivery of elective surgical care.
This role suits a confident Band 6+ practitioner who is ready to influence service delivery, develop people, and help shape the future of peri‑operative services.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Operational Leadership
Lead the delivery of safe, high‑quality elective peri‑operative care
Act as Theatre Coordinator or support daily floor management to ensure efficient patient flow
Maintain strong clinical credibility in scrub, anaesthetics or recovery
Ensure full compliance with WHO Surgical Safety Standards
Act as a patient and staff advocate within the theatre environment
Workforce & Resource Management
Support day‑to‑day operational management of staff, rotas and skill mix
Review staffing levels using dependency tools and escalate recommendations
Contribute to recruitment, induction, appraisals, absence management and PDRs
Support budget control, stock management and cost‑improvement initiatives
Governance, Quality & Safety
Champion clinical governance, infection prevention and patient safety
Participate in audits, incident investigations and implementation of learning
Ensure accurate documentation and use of theatre management systems
Support safeguarding processes for vulnerable adults and children
Education, Development & Change
Support, coach and develop theatre staff and students
Lead service improvements, change initiatives and adoption of best practice
Promote evidence‑based care aligned with national and professional standards
Support research, innovation and implementation of new techniques
The Ideal Candidate
Essential
Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC)
Degree‑level qualification
Post‑registration qualification in Theatres / Anaesthetics / Recovery
Mentorship or Assessor qualification
Significant peri‑operative experience
Leadership experience at Band 6 or above
Strong understanding of clinical governance, audit and risk management
Ability to work autonomously and lead under pressure
